In Jan '2018, the department moved from the transit campus (MBM, Ratanada) to the permanent campus (Karwar). The department was temporarily housed in the second floor of the chemistry department building. Recently, in 2022, the department completely moved its laboratories and office premises to the new BSBE building at the permanent campus of IITJ.

The Department aspires to build a unique academic and research ecosystem that enables sustainable development of human resource capacity and technological solutions in healthcare, renewable energy, food and environment. We provide state-of-the-art domain knowledge and training to understand biological systems as well as innovative Bio-Tech solutions for applications in medical and environmental engineering domains. These include biofuels, diagnostics, therapeutics, smart healthcare devices.

The Department currently has 16 Faculty members with expertise ranging from fundamental research to application sciences. These include the areas of brain science, inflammation and immunity, neuronal protein quality control, microtubule biology, tumour biology, molecular microbiology, environmental biotechnology, genomics, plant functional genomics, computational, structural and systems biology, nanomedicine and biomaterials engineering, etc. The Department has organized itself into nine thematic areas including cell and molecular physiology, neuroscience & neuroengineering, biomaterials & tissue engineering, genomics & systems biology, environmental biotechnology, molecular microbiology, biophysics, molecular motors & cell motility, and computational biology & bioinformatics. The Department faculty members are also affiliated to the School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE), Centre for Emerging Technologies for Sustainable Development (CETSD) and interdisciplinary research platforms smart healthcare (IDRPSH) that provide avenues and platforms for extensive trans-disciplinary interactions of the faculties and students from diverse disciplines in academic and research programs.

In addition to teaching, the Department is striving to be recognised for excellence in research and technology. We have latest state of the art basic teaching laboratories and several thematic research laboratories. Our current faculty strength is 19, and they are conducting research activities in all major areas of chemical sciences, including organic synthesis and catalysis, chemical biology, main group chemistry and organometallics, materials and polymer chemistry, spectroscopy and chemical dynamics, biophysical chemistry, and computational chemistry. Welcome to the Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering

Rapid urbanization and rising expectations for quality of life have created an increasing demand for reliable, intelligent, and sustainable infrastructure systems that can effectively serve societal needs at multiple scales—from individuals to entire communities. In response to these evolving challenges, the civil and infrastructure engineering sector has undergone a significant transformation and continues to evolve with the integration of advanced technologies.

The Department of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering at IIT Jodhpur was established in January 2020 and commenced its academic programs in the academic year 2020–21. The department aims to develop a new generation of engineers equipped with strong multidisciplinary training and a deep understanding of emerging technologies that are shaping the future of infrastructure systems.

The academic programs offered by the department uniquely integrate the fundamentals of conventional civil engineering with transformative technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Digital Twins (DT), and automated management and information systems. A major thrust of the department is on the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of large-scale, integrated infrastructure systems across diverse domains.

The Department offers B.Tech. programs in Electrical Engineering as well as in Electronics Engineering with broad range of major and minor specializations and four state-of-the-art M.Tech. program in Sensors and Internet of Things (SIoT), Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), Communication Systems (CS) and Microelectronics & VLSI, M.Tech. IVS (Executive) is also offered to working professionals.

The Department also offers Ph.D. programs with a broad range of specialization covering detailed aspects of Microelectronics, Signal Processing, Communication, Microwave & Photonics, Power systems, Control systems, etc. The Department is also starting a new MTech programs in Microelectronics & VLSI & Power Engineering from July 2026.

The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to advancing the fields of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. Our vision is to emphasize both the fundamental principles of core mathematics and the foundational concepts essential for analyzing key principles applied in cutting-edge technologies. Since its establishment, the department has been actively engaged in research across various critical areas of mathematics.

Currently, the department offers following programmes - 1. Four year BTech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering (along with the School of AIDE)
2. Two-years M.Sc. in Mathematics,
3.Two years M.Tech program in Data and Computational Sciences,
4. Four-years M.Sc-M.Tech in Mathematics-Data and Computational Sciences

Since its establishment in 2015, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Jodhpur has been dedicated to cultivating a vibrant academic and research environment. Our primary focus lies in sustainable human resource development and the pursuit of technological solutions that shape the future. Driven by a commitment to excellence, we have continually evolved our curriculum to seamlessly integrate design thinking with a robust foundation in Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Materials Engineering at IIT Jodhpur was established in 2017, and it is committed to providing high-quality education and conducting research in the broad field of Materials Engineering. The Department continuously strives for excellence in teaching and research through innovative pedagogy, curriculum development, interdisciplinary projects, and active collaborations with industries, R&D labs, and academia. Our goal is to enable students to think independently and equip them with relevant skill sets, encouraging graduates to innovate and address present-day materials challenges to meet the country's needs.

Currently, the Department offers B. Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programs. Its teaching and research activities cover four major streams: structural materials, functional materials, computational materials engineering, and process metallurgy. From structural materials to semiconductors, we seek to understand the processing, composition, structure, properties, and performance of materials to derive novel, effective, and sustainable alternatives. Efforts are underway to introduce advanced concepts such as smart materials, additive manufacturing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and composite materials to solve interdisciplinary problems requiring materials engineering knowledge.

The School of Liberal Arts (SoLA) at Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur was established in 2022, evolving from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) that was founded in 2015. Conceived as a space for rigorous interdisciplinary inquiry, SoLA advances scholarship at the intersection of the humanistic, social, environmental, and technological domains.

SoLA’s flagship academic offering is the two-year MSc in Computational Social Sciences (CSS), launched in 2022, with two specialized tracks: Computational Economics and Computational Sociology. The School also hosts a vibrant doctoral program, with 73 PhD scholars pursuing research across literature, linguistics, cultural studies, creative arts, sociology, economics, philosophy, psychology, public health, and allied disciplines.

In keeping with its mission to foster sustained dialogue between STEM and the social sciences, SoLA offers interdisciplinary cross-institute courses for engineering students at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. These courses are designed to integrate computational and technological perspectives with critical social inquiry.

At present, the School comprises 26 faculty members, including one Professor of Practice and one Adjunct Faculty member. The faculty are distinguished academics and practitioners whose teaching and research actively bridge disciplinary boundaries.

School of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDE) is a transdisciplinary School charged with a mission to be at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science research - theoretical, application driven and locally relevant for regional needs; play a leading role in the delivery of AI and Data Science education in the formal and informal sectors at all levels; and become a coveted destination for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science technology development and entrepreneurship.

AIDE School offers research and education in a wide array of emerging and challenging areas of foundational AI & DS, and AI & DS Applications.

AIDE School has, as of 12th Jan 2026, 26 faculty members, including 10 affiliated faculty members from 6 different academic units across different disciplines within IIT Jodhpur and 2 adjunct faculty members from outside IIT Jodhpur.

AIDE School currently has four Centres of Excellence, namely, Brain Science and Applications, Mathematical and Computational Economics, Intelligent Infrastructure, AI Based Precision Healthcare.

The School currently has 7 faculty members and a total of 85 students, comprising 73 M.Des. students and 12 PhD scholars. The M.Des. student strength includes 51 students enrolled in the M.Des. XR Design program and 22 students enrolled in the M.Des. Smart Product Design program.

The M.Des. in XR Design is a pioneering program in the areas of Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and Virtual Reality (VR) experience design, addressing the growing industry demand for creating useful, engaging, and socially relevant immersive experiences. The program prepares students to design experiences that extend the physical world or operate entirely in virtual environments, with applications across domains such as healthcare, education, entertainment, and industry. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and equips students with skills in XR prototyping, interaction design, real-time engines, and 3D modeling and animation.

The M.Des. in Smart Product Design, launched in 2025, focuses on the design of intelligent, connected, and user-centered products that integrate physical form, embedded systems, interaction design, and emerging technologies. The program prepares students to translate user needs and market trends into meaningful product concepts through a strong grounding in design methodology, systems thinking, and human factors. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and enables students to integrate hardware, software, and user interfaces, while engaging with emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Extended Reality (XR), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Across its academic programs, the School of Design strives to develop designers who can empathize with users, identify needs, and iteratively develop meaningful, responsible, and context-aware design solutions. In addition to its postgraduate and doctoral programs, the School also offers elective courses in Product Design, Human–Computer Interaction, and allied areas for undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students across the Institute.

Mission

There are five major broad missions on which CETSD is working. These are as follows:
1. To provide a platform for non-governmental and governmental collaborators to work together to apply emerging technologies for finding and implementing solutions towards achieving SDG targets.
2. To help develop scientific temper societies to understand technologies that are sustainable or technologies that are using sustainability aspects.
3. To innovate solutions and strategies towards challenges in location specific problems related to energy use, education, water management, infrastructure, traditional livelihood skills, and health.
4. To perform applied research in areas such agriculture, environment, healthcare, waste management, pollution, livelihood, knowledge dissemination and rural development.
5. To make synergistic policy suggestions to handle issues in energy use, agriculture, water management, local pollution in a region and its influences on health.

CETSD is the Center for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT) at IIT Jodhpur in line with the decree of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (now Ministry of Education) to be set at all IITs. It therefore partners with RuTAG Center IIT Delhi (from the Office of PSA )and UBA program, CRDT, IIT Delhi.
It is also a Science and Technology Innovation hub (STI Hub from March 2023) after the grant support from DST-SEED Division.

Bioscience and Biomedical Engineering

The department has highly accomplished faculty addressing impactful research topics that include protein folding and stability, biophysics, bioinformatics, macromolecular simulations, infectious and Alzheimer’s disease, tissue engineering, drug delivery, cancer biology: MRI and optical imaging, biomicrofluidics, artificial organs, artificial skin fabrication, drug diffusion through skin, targeted drug delivery, biosensors, lab-on-a chip devices, blood flow in microchannels and computational and system biology. The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities in the field.

The interface between biology and engineering as incorporated in BSBME is one of the exciting fields of the 21st century. We aim to inculcate cutting-edge research in the field along with world-class teaching in both the MTech and PhD programs. We shall train the students to tackle real-world biomedical and biotechnological problems. Several new job opportunities are existing and are expected to evolve dramatically with focus on human health. Some of the biggest players include Johnson & Johnson, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Syngene and GSK, and medical technology and imaging companies, such as Siemens, Philips. Hospitals also require experts in this area to help develop and improve medical devices. We have tremendously strong partners, as the BSBME faculty members actively participate in collaboration such as with AIIMS Raipur.

Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry, IIT Bhilai was established in 2016, along with the inauguration of IIT Bhilai. The department is committed to engage in high quality research and pursuit of excellence in teaching. It offers institute core courses and departmental electives for undergraduate B.Tech. and postgraduate M.Tech. students of Engineering in the Institute. It also offers a two years M.Sc. programme and a Ph.D programme in Chemistry. Major thrust is in the areas of inorganic and organometallic chemistry, polymer chemistry, halide perovskite solar-cells, bionanotechnology, photoactive metal-organic hybrid materials, theoretical and computational chemistry, total synthesis and antibiotics, molecular dynamics simulations and bioinformatics.

The Department has distinguished faculty members, trained at renowned Institutes in India and abroad. The faculty members attract substantial financial support for their research activities from both governmental and private agencies. Several members of the faculty have been awarded medals/prizes for distinction in their areas of research. The faculty members have also been active in organizing scientific meetings/workshops from time to time and they are being invited to deliver lectures at various national and international conferences and symposia. The Department offers a vibrant atmosphere to nurture the spirit of scientific inquiry and to pursue cutting-edge research in a highly encouraging environment.

Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and engineering houses two major engineering disciplines – namely, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI), and it is hard to overemphasize these disciplines’ enormous powers in shaping our cultural and civilizational progress: be it installation of a precision camera on a GPS satellite, or detecting gravitational waves, or forecasting weather hazards, the penetration of computer and data science inventions in all parts of our daily lives is deep and permanent.

Initially offering academic programs only in the discipline of computer science and engineering, the department has quickly realized the huge importance of data science subjects in terms of industrial and economic productivity, and the necessity of having dedicated academic programs in this discipline. As a result, UG and PG programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) were launched in 2020. Since then, even in this short period of existence, DSAI programs have continuously been able to offer diverse sets of new courses to our students, including many advanced ones.

Electrical Engineering

 The electrical engineering department of IIT Bhilai offers PhD in Electrical Engineering, MTech in three different specializations, namely, Electrical Vehicular Technology, Control & Instrumentation, and Power & Power Electronics. It also offers 4-year BTech Program of Electrical Engineering.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering of IIT Bhilai established in the year 2023 and it offers PhD , MTech and BTech Programs.

Liberal Arts

The department of Liberal Arts offered PhD program. The liberal arts trace their geneology to the emergence of studia humanitatis towards the closure of the mediaeval epoch in European history, when secular rather than ecclesiastical scholarship began to be foregrounded as the pivot of humanity’s quest for knowledge, wisdom, and truth. The pervasive spread of scientific temper and scientific method, rooted in the Enlightenment which followed the Renaissance, facilitated a flowering and branching of various streams of enquiry, the birth of the social and the natural sciences. The institutionalisation of disciplinary praxis over the long nineteenth century contributed to the growth of academic rigour, just as the industrialisation and geopolitics of the twentieth century engendered further compartmentalisation and professionalisation of scholarly work into the humanities and social sciences

Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering

 IIT Bhilai is situated in one of the mineral-rich states, Chhattisgarh, next to one of the oldest steel plants in India, SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant (SAIL-BSP). This department is leading several technological developments and their commercialization.

The department offers various academic programs, including BTech, BTech (honors), MTech, and Ph.D. The students also could complete dual degree programs through conversion. The curriculum of these programs has been developed in view of the current technological status and future demands. These programs provide a solid foundation while covering topics like steel and alloy making as well as advanced materials like electronic, smart, ceramic, energy, materials, and polymers.

Mathematics

The department started in 2016 to pursue excellence in teaching and high-quality research by developing appropriate curricula and teaching practices. Mathematics brings together all branches of science and technology. It reproduces the spirit of rationality and takes the leading role in shaping the career of an engineering student to meet global challenges. One of our focuses is to produce engineers equipped with modern mathematics tools with a strong understanding of real-world and engineering problems. One of the central visions of our department is to produce high-quality research and create a healthy environment for research. The faculty members are actively engaged in research along with the teaching responsibilities. Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in Mathematics and Computing started in 2019-20. The department offers Ph.D. programs in various research areas of Mathematics.

Mechanical Engineering

The core department offers a thorough and well decorated academic structure for theoretical understanding and their practical applications. Mechanical engineering department has efficiently combined the traditional and futuristic laboratories to inculcate technological skills among the pursuing students. In a broad sense we have an Automation lab, thermo-fluidic lab and a fabrication lab which includes Robots, 3D printing equipment, CNC machining centre, CNC turning centre, wire-cut-EDM, laser cutting machine, heat and flow measuring instruments, IC engines, UTM, and other table top facilities. The state-of-the-art laboratory equipment will enable the students to test newly learned theories and empower them to convert any idea into reality. The department efficiently covers all the traditional core areas of statics, dynamics, vibrations, structural analysis, materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer, along with manufacturing technologies etc. Apart from the traditional areas, department also attaches significant emphasis on more emergent areas including alternative energy, near-net-shape manufacturing and industry 4.0. The department started with B.Tech program in August 2016. Now the department is offering M.Tech and Ph.D programs in diverse fields of advanced research. 

Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of engineering that blends mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control engineering. This field is pivotal in the development of modern technology, contributing to innovations across various sectors including robotics, automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and consumer electronics.
Mechatronics research involves integration of cutting-edge methodologies from multiple engineering disciplines. It’s a field that encourages creativity and innovation, and it offers the chance to work on cutting-edge technology that can have a real impact on the world.
At IIT Bhilai, mechatronics curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive education that integrates mechanical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control systems. Mechatronics curriculum spans from circuits and control systems to machine design, incorporating elements of robotics, embedded systems, and advanced manufacturing technologies, all aimed at developing highly integrated and intelligent systems.

Physics

The Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai, came into existence along with the establishment of the IIT Bhilai in 2016 and has already made its mark at the national and international level with several funded research projects, national-level awards, research collaborations across the country and globe. Based on the solid foundation of state-of-the-art undergraduate teaching of BTech students and postgraduate degree programs backed by a group of very bright, ambitious young faculty members, the Department is thriving and expanding rapidly to be one of the prominent departments within the institute and country. The Department is currently active in cutting edge research in the areas of condensed matter theory and experiment, soft matter, high energy, nuclear physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Central to our mission is the training of the next generation of physicists through courses, seminars, access to cutting-edge experimental infrastructures, and mentoring by faculty members that are among the best in the world in their field.
