| IIT Jodhpur | Bioscience & Bioengineering | The focus group of Biology was started in 2015 with the PhD program in Biology. In 2017, we started the PG degree in M.Tech in Bioscience and Bioengineering and the focus group of Biology got the status of the “Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering”. From 2018, we initiated a UG degree program, B.Tech in Biotechnology. In 2019, there was a major curriculum revision and we revived our previous UG and PG programs as B.Tech in Bioengineering and M.Tech in Bioengineering, respectively. Department also initiated a M.Tech-Ph.D dual degree program in the year 2020.
In Jan '2018, the department moved from the transit campus (MBM, Ratanada) to the permanent campus (Karwar). The department was temporarily housed in the second floor of the chemistry department building. Recently, in 2022, the department completely moved its laboratories and office premises to the new BSBE building at the permanent campus of IITJ. The Department aspires to build a unique academic and research ecosystem that enables sustainable development of human resource capacity and technological solutions in healthcare, renewable energy, food and environment. We provide state-of-the-art domain knowledge and training to understand biological systems as well as innovative Bio-Tech solutions for applications in medical and environmental engineering domains. These include biofuels, diagnostics, therapeutics, smart healthcare devices. The Department currently has 16 Faculty members with expertise ranging from fundamental research to application sciences. These include the areas of brain science, inflammation and immunity, neuronal protein quality control, microtubule biology, tumour biology, molecular microbiology, environmental biotechnology, genomics, plant functional genomics, computational, structural and systems biology, nanomedicine and biomaterials engineering, etc. The Department has organized itself into nine thematic areas including cell and molecular physiology, neuroscience & neuroengineering, biomaterials & tissue engineering, genomics & systems biology, environmental biotechnology, molecular microbiology, biophysics, molecular motors & cell motility, and computational biology & bioinformatics. The department has highly accomplished faculty addressing impactful research topics that include protein folding and stability, biophysics, bioinformatics, macromolecular simulations, infectious and Alzheimer’s disease, tissue engineering, drug delivery, cancer biology: MRI and optical imaging, biomicrofluidics, artificial organs, artificial skin fabrication, drug diffusion through skin, targeted drug delivery, biosensors, lab-on-a chip devices, blood flow in microchannels and computational and system biology. The department is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities in the field. The interface between biology and engineering as incorporated in BSBME is one of the exciting fields of the 21st century. We aim to inculcate cutting-edge research in the field along with world-class teaching in both the MTech and PhD programs. We shall train the students to tackle real-world biomedical and biotechnological problems. Several new job opportunities are existing and are expected to evolve dramatically with focus on human health. Some of the biggest players include Johnson & Johnson, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Syngene and GSK, and medical technology and imaging companies, such as Siemens, Philips. It also offers a two years M.Sc. programme and a Ph.D programme in Chemistry. We have also started the Integrated and Interdisciplinary BS-MS dual degree program from Autumn 2022-23 semester. These two programs will allow the department to offer several advanced courses in Physics. There are ongoing research projects funded by external funding agencies in the department.
